US office in Hyderabad to start by late 2008

US Ambassador David C. Mulford said his country's consulate in the city would be operational by late 2008. This will be the fourth US consulate in India.

Mr Mulford and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy on Tuesday oversaw the signing of a lease agreement for establishing the consulate at Paigah Palace for five years US President George W. Bush had promised to establish a consulate in Hyderabad during his visit to India and budgetary support of $ 7.6 million was announced for this, Mr Mulford told media persons. Hyderabad was chosen because of its strategic location and its strengths in the areas of biotechnology, information technology and a host of other businesses, he added.

Mr Mulford went on to say that Hyderabad was a well managed city with fewer problems and this also worked in its favor.

He thanked the Chief Minister for allotting 12 acres of prime land near Gachibowli for the permanent consulate, which would take nearly five years to complete.

Demand for US visas from the State was growing year by year and the present consulate at Chennai was unable to cater to the demand, said Mr Mulford.
